Salerno - a modern city with history an hour from Naples

31/10/2025

Today, I will add another possible day trip that is easy to take from Scalea by train.

I'm not an expert on Salerno, but I'll try to share my experience of this city, which pleasantly surprised me.

I took a train from Scalea at 7:05 in the morning for 12€ towards Naples, and shortly after 9 a.m., I was already getting off at the Salerno station. If you go straight from the station, you'll reach the port, from where many boats depart for enchanting destinations along the Amalfi Coast (but more on that some other time). If you leave the station and turn right at the small square, you'll find yourself at the beginning of the pedestrian zone. The walk through the pedestrian zone itself is a lovely experience, and if you're keen on shopping, you'll find plenty to enjoy.

By walking through the pedestrian zone, you will reach the historic center of the city, where I was absolutely captivated by the local cathedral. It is dedicated to Saint Matthew, whose relics are housed here. The cathedral is known for its beautiful Romanesque architecture, mosaics, and historical significance for the city, especially as a pilgrimage site. Every year, pilgrims from all over the world come here to pay homage to this saint.

I happened to stumble upon a very unusual event at the cathedral - the blessing of athletes and sports clubs of the city. It was really interesting to see such a large number of young people (especially football players and their fans) that they had to secure their way through the cathedral with security. And I, because I look like the director of the globe, naturally got past the security all the way to the ceremony, and if I hadn't been startled, they might have blessed me too. Definitely an event not commonly seen in our regions.

From the cathedral, I recommend walking about 100 meters to the waterfront. The waterfront promenade is new, very long, lined with parks, a bike path, playgrounds, and of course, a large sports marina. The city is very proud of it. The walk itself is very pleasant, and I recommend going all the way to Piazza della Libertá. This square, one of the largest seaside squares in Europe, is the heart of modern Salerno. It is designed as a multifunctional space for public events and is surrounded by greenery and promenades. It's an ideal place for relaxation and observing city life, with plenty of restaurants and bars. The modern architecture of this place is, from my perspective, further enhanced by the construction of the port terminal by architect Zaha Hadid, designed to resemble a sea shell. Personally, I really like the building and wasn't shy to explore it thoroughly.

I had my trip planned with an overnight stay, and I must say that Salerno at night, especially its modern part, is breathtaking.

My tip: if your flight departs before 2 p.m. from Naples, it's impossible to travel by train from Scalea in time to catch your flight. However, if you choose to stay overnight in Salerno and then continue to Naples airport in the morning, you'll not only make your flight but also enjoy a very pleasant experience visiting an interesting city.
